Northern Nigeria’s governors are gathering in Kaduna today amid an alarming surge in deadly violence, with over 130 fatalities recorded within two weeks.
The high-level meeting, initiated by NGF Chairman and Gombe State Governor Muhammad Yahaya, aims to craft a united front against the spiraling security threats facing the region.
This development follows a series of violent episodes, including a Boko Haram assault in Borno that left an army captain and a soldier dead; and deadly incidents in Bauchi, Yobe, Sokoto, and Benue.
In total, civilians, soldiers, traditional rulers, and politicians have fallen victim to attacks from jihadist factions and armed militias.
The newly emergent Mahmuda group has worsened the crisis, joining Boko Haram and ISWAP in carrying out large-scale attacks, particularly in the North-East and North-West.
In Gwer East LGA of Benue, four people, including APC leader Akaabo Johnson, were recently killed by suspected herders.
Preparations for the NGF meeting began Friday, with governors’ secretaries holding strategy talks.
A separate late-night meeting of North-West governors, hosted by Kaduna’s Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, preceded today’s larger summit.
A source familiar with the NGF’s agenda hinted that key discussions will center on defending civilians, reinforcing security forces, and confronting the resurgence of terror groups in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.
