CUPP slams APC Govs over Tinubu’s 2027 endorsement

-

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned the recent declaration by governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsing President Bola Tinubu as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, calling it a sign of desperation and disconnection from public sentiment.

In a statement issued Thursday night, CUPP’s National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the development as troubling and indicative of internal fear within the ruling party.

He noted that the endorsement, which took place during the APC’s National Policy and Development Summit in Abuja, was moved by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and seconded by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

“This early push for President Tinubu’s re-election, barely halfway into his first term, raises serious concerns,” Ameh said. “It suggests anxiety within the APC over growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians, who are enduring serious economic hardship.”

The CUPP maintained that such an endorsement fails to reflect the views of the general populace, warning that political leaders should not take voters for granted.

“Rather than engaging in early endorsements, the APC should be addressing the harsh realities Nigerians are facing,” he added. “The public sees this as an attempt to sidestep democratic norms.”

Ameh also warned that the ruling party’s actions could undermine public trust in the democratic process.

“The 2023 election showed the people’s determination to shape their future, and any attempt to repeat past mistakes or manipulate outcomes in 2027 will be strongly resisted,” he stated.

He urged Nigerians to stay alert and resolute in defending democracy, emphasizing that the people, not political elites, will determine the nation’s direction through the ballot box.
