A man lost his life while another is fighting for survival following a mob assault in Bauchi State over accusations of stealing a dog.
Police authorities confirmed that the incident took place on April 9 in the Lushi neighbourhood, where a crowd of youths descended on two men, accusing them of theft.
Peter, one of the victims, died at the scene, while 38-year-old Dokagk Danladi was badly wounded with machete cuts to the head and rushed to a teaching hospital for emergency care.
In a statement issued by police spokesperson Ahmed Wakil said a team led by the local Divisional Police Officer visited the site to gather intelligence and evidence against those involved.
Bauchi State’s Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a gross abuse of justice.
He emphasized that vigilante actions undermine the law and warned that those responsible would face the consequences.
The police reassured the public of their resolve to ensure justice is served and called on residents to refrain from mob actions, stressing the importance of due legal procedures in addressing crime.
