Massacre continues in Benue as gunmen kill three fisherwomen

Three fisherwomen from Tse Ijim, near Anyiin in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, were brutally murdered by gunmen on Monday.

The women, who were from the Tiv ethnic group, were ambushed by suspected Jukun militia while returning from the market along the Anyiin-Wukari road, located within Benue State.

According to an eyewitness, Teryila Abuur, the women were attacked and killed by the assailants as they made their way home.

The Logo Local Government Area, which borders Wukari Local Government Area in Taraba State, has long been a hotspot for violent clashes between Tiv and Jukun communities, a conflict that has persisted for over three decades.

The attack, which occurred around 4 p.m., has triggered fear among farming communities in Gaambetiev, with community leader Chief Iorbee Fate expressing concerns that the killings could escalate tensions between the two ethnic groups.

At the time of reporting, the bodies of the victims had been taken to the Anyiin Health Centre.

Local police have yet to receive an official report on the latest massacre.
