Lagos court jails two drivers for assault against traffic officials

Two commercial vehicle operators will spend the next three months in jail for instigating a violent attack against officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The drivers identified as Mohammed Musa and Muhammed Nasara were convicted by a Lagos Mobile Court after they were caught rallying fellow drivers to attack traffic personnel along the Victoria Island-Lekki axis.

According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the incident occurred on Monday following the impoundment of a white minibus (plate number SMK 742 YJ) around Mekwen Bridge for traffic violations.

What began as a routine enforcement operation quickly escalated.

“In a blatant act of defiance, the vehicle’s driver mobilised a group of fellow commercial transport operators, who arrived at the scene in two additional minibuses (GGE 995 YF) and unleashed a premeditated and vicious attack on the LASTMA officials,” said Bakare-Oki in a statement issued Wednesday.

The violence, which unfolded near LASTMA’s Central District (Zone 9) in Victoria Island, was halted by the swift arrival of security agents.

Two of the instigators were apprehended and taken straight to court.

The drivers were sentenced on April 8,
