The Abia State government has pledged to strengthen its efforts against criminal activities by investigating traditional rulers who may be sheltering criminals within their domains.
Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information, shared this update during a press briefing on Wednesday in Umuahia, following the state executive council meeting.
Kanu explained that security forces would carry out operations in areas identified through credible intelligence as potential hideouts for criminal elements.
He emphasized that any traditional ruler found complicit in protecting criminals would face severe legal repercussions, as the government is determined to rid the state of insecurity.
The commissioner also called on town unions and traditional leaders to play an active role in ensuring safety and vigilance in their respective communities.
“Recently, a high-profile kidnapping occurred in Ukwa involving a respected business figure and a son of this state. However, security agencies have confirmed his safe return, and he is in stable health, as certified by medical professionals,” Kanu noted.
He concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to securing the safety of all citizens and urged the public to stay vigilant, reporting any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
