Keyamo: Reps grill Aviation Minister on airport infrastructure decay, safety measures

The House Committee on Aviation has questioned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, regarding the deteriorating state of infrastructure at the country’s local and international airports.

During a meeting in Abuja, the committee’s Chairman, Abdullah Garba, scrutinized Keyamo along with other Ministry of Aviation officials.

Garba expressed deep concern over the poor condition of airport infrastructure and stressed the need for urgent government action.

He emphasized the critical importance of ensuring the safety of personnel and stakeholders at the airports.

The committee’s primary goal, he noted, is to identify the necessary equipment and resources required to rejuvenate the aviation sector.

In response, Keyamo acknowledged that the level of infrastructural decay is a significant concern for the ministry.

He noted that the ministry is currently conducting a safety assessment and an international audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Keyamo assured the committee that the ministry is preparing a list of required equipment and safety upgrades to meet international standards.

He also clarified that many of the ministry’s ongoing contracts are still in progress.

Following the meeting, the Chairman and other stakeholders convened in an executive session to further address the lawmakers’ concerns.
