AGF clarifies misreporting on Simon Ekpa’s extradition

-

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has clarified that reports claiming the Federal Government has initiated an extradition process against Simon Ekpa are false.

In a statement issued on Friday through Kamarudeen Ogundele, the Special Adviser to the President on Communication and Publicity, Fagbemi explained that his remarks at the Stakeholders/Citizen Engagement Forum in Abuja on Thursday had been misinterpreted.

He clarified that he had stated the Nigerian government is in ongoing discussions with Finnish authorities to ensure that Ekpa is held accountable for his actions, rather than stating that an extradition process had commenced.

The AGF further explained that due to the cross-border nature of Ekpa’s alleged crimes, the Nigerian government is awaiting the outcome of his trial in Finland before taking any further steps.

Fagbemi urged the media to be more careful with their reporting, especially on such sensitive issues.

Ekpa, a prominent figure of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is facing terrorism charges in Finland, where he is currently undergoing trial.
