Peter Obi decries Bokkos killings, urges govt to bring perpetrators to book

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the latest attack on communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, calling for urgent government intervention to curb rising insecurity in the country.

On the night of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, gunmen launched coordinated attacks on five villages in Bokkos, leaving at least 10 people dead. By the next day, the death toll had surpassed 40 as more bodies were discovered.

Reacting to the tragedy, Obi described the incident as a “senseless massacre” and expressed concern over the continued loss of innocent lives to violence.

“I woke up to yet another horrifying and deeply distressing report from Bokkos, Plateau State. Entire families have been wiped out in another ruthless attack. Women and children were not spared,” Obi stated.

He identified the affected communities—Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai—lamenting that they have been plunged into mourning, forced to conduct mass burials for their loved ones.

The former Anambra governor questioned the government’s failure to address the escalating violence, asking, “For how much longer will these killings, kidnappings, and acts of terror continue in a nation that is not at war? How many more lives must be lost before the government takes decisive action?”

He also raised concerns over the growing insecurity nationwide, stating that Nigerians now live in fear.

“We have sadly normalized mass killings and mass burials. Every Nigerian life is valuable, whether in Edo, Benue, Enugu, Borno, Anambra, Ondo, or Plateau,” he said.

Obi emphasized the need for government protection in vulnerable communities like Bokkos in Plateau, Jato-Aka in Benue, Eha-Amufu in Enugu, Ufuma in Anambra, and Aba Oyinbo in Ondo.

Calling for immediate action, he urged the Federal Government to put an end to the bloodshed, ensure justice for victims, and implement effective security measures to prevent future attacks.

“These tragedies cannot continue unchecked. The government and security agencies must rise to the occasion, halt these killings, take firm steps to prevent recurrence, and bring the perpetrators to justice,” Obi asserted.n
