Violent protests broke out in Iware, a community in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, as enraged youths attempted to set fire to the office of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The unrest followed the alleged torture and death of a suspect in the custody of NSCDC operatives.
According to intelligence reports, the crisis erupted after 42-year-old Yunusa Kaka was allegedly brutalized by security personnel at the NSCDC office in Iware.
The incident began on March 30 at approximately 9:00 p.m. when 24-year-old Biliaminu Adamu was arrested for allegedly stealing two mobile phones and two packs of Benson cigarettes from a resident, Peter Majo.
While being interrogated, Adamu claimed he had handed the stolen items to Kaka, who strongly denied any involvement.
In an effort to force a confession, security operatives reportedly subjected Kaka to severe torture.
He later lost consciousness and was rushed by his brother to Miyetti Allah Hospital in Iware, where he was pronounced dead.
News of his demise ignited outrage among local youths, who mobilized in an attempt to storm and burn down the NSCDC facility.
However, security forces intervened and successfully thwarted the attack. Order has since been restored in the area.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kaka’s death, while tensions remain high in the community.
