Senate declares confidence in Akpabio amid ongoing dispute

The Nigerian Senate has unanimously affirmed its confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday’s plenary session.

The motion, moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West), reinforced support for Akpabio.

This decision comes two days after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), who was suspended as Chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, told the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York that she was sanctioned for alleging sexual harassment by Akpabio.

Top News initially reported that Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed contempt charges against Akpabio and other Senate officials over her six-month suspension without pay.

In response, the Senate urged Nigerians to stay focused on national matters, stressing that the case is already in court. Lawmakers cited Order 40 of their standing rules, stating they cannot interfere in a judicial process.
