NYSC uncertain about N77,000 allowance payment amid funding delays

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has admitted uncertainty regarding the implementation of the new N77,000 monthly stipend for corps members, citing financial constraints.

Despite the Federal Government’s approval of the increase from N33,000 in July 2024 and assurances that payments would commence in February 2025, corps members continue to receive the old allowance, sparking widespread frustration amid Nigeria’s economic hardships.

Speaking on the issue, NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Carol Embu, told Vanguard in Abuja that the scheme is actively seeking the necessary financial backing to implement the new payment but emphasized that the process requires time.

She explained that the newly appointed NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, is still settling into his role and assessing the situation.

According to Embu, the minister overseeing the NYSC has also addressed concerns over the delay, assuring that updates will be provided once there is clarity.

She acknowledged that the prolonged wait has placed corps members under financial strain, as the current allowance is widely considered inadequate.

However, she could not specify when the N77,000 payments would commence.

“We are pursuing the cash backing, and our new Director-General is still familiarizing himself with the matter. This process requires time and due diligence.

“While I cannot confirm when payments will begin, I assure you that the NYSC is working on it. The minister also has more insight into the situation, and once we have clarity, we will provide updates,” she stated.
