JUST IN: IBB finally acknowledges Abiola as winner of June 12 election

Nigerian former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has officially acknowledged that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.

This revelation is documented in his autobiography: A Journey in Service, which was unveiled in Abuja on Thursday.

In a review of the book, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo conveyed Babangida’s assertion that Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, secured both the majority of votes and the necessary national spread to be declared president.

Reflecting on the annulment, Babangida described it as one of the most difficult moments of his life, stating, “There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He met all the necessary conditions.”

He, however, expressed satisfaction that President Muhammadu Buhari later acknowledged Abiola’s victory by posthumously awarding him the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title, an honor reserved for presidents.

Details later.
