Impeached Lagos Speaker, Obasa hits streets, attracts large crowd

Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, made a public appearance on the streets of Lagos on Tuesday, drawing a significant crowd of supporters.

This development follows the controversial security takeover of the Assembly complex just a day earlier.

Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13 due to allegations of financial mismanagement, appeared unfazed by his impeachment. In a video shared by journalist Oseni Rufai, Obasa is seen confidently walking and acknowledging the cheers of his supporters.

On Monday, security operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly in what many perceived as an attempt to reinstate Obasa.

Armed personnel took control of key areas within the complex, including the Speaker’s and Clerk’s offices, while barring lawmakers, staff, and visitors from entering.

Despite the blockade, members of the Assembly were eventually able to convene, where they expressed strong disapproval of the security presence, which they viewed as an attack on democracy.

The lawmakers condemned the invasion, questioning the motivations behind it.

In response to the disruption, the Assembly passed a unanimous vote of confidence in the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, reaffirming their full support for her leadership and denouncing any external interference in legislative matters. Following this resolution, the House adjourned indefinitely.
