Bolt driver beaten to death by customer in Benin

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has stated that a customer was responsible for the death of a Bolt driver in Benin City.

Speaking on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, Efosa Egbebor, clarified that NSCDC officials were only assisting the police with their investigation.

“Our personnel did not kill anyone. The matter is currently being handled by the police, and we cannot act as judges in our own case,” Egbebor stated.

He explained that the incident stemmed from a verbal dispute between the Bolt driver and a customer at a hotel, which later escalated into a physical altercation.

“The driver was allegedly beaten by the customer and his friends. Unfortunately, he later passed away,” he added.

Egbebor further noted that NSCDC officers present at the hotel only intervened to restore order and were not involved in the assault.

“Our officers have provided the police with all necessary information. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation,” he said.

Dismissing claims that NSCDC personnel were arrested, Egbebor clarified that they voluntarily reported to the police to aid the inquiry.

He emphasized that the corps would not tolerate misconduct or illegality, assuring that anyone found guilty would face the full weight of the law.

“Until the investigation is concluded, we cannot determine who was at fault. However, we will not shield anyone involved in wrongdoing. Justice will take its course,” he affirmed.
