President Bola Tinubu has officially requested the Senate’s approval to dismiss the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.
The RECs in question— Ike Uzochukwu of Abia, Hudu Yunusa-Ari of Adamawa, and Nura Ali of Sokoto—were suspended following allegations of misconduct during the 2023 general elections.
The request was made in a letter presented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session. Citing Section 157, Subsection 1 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Tinubu urged the Senate to review and vote on the termination of the RECs’ appointments.
The letter clarified that the suspensions had occurred as early as March 2022, before the current administration took office. Tinubu expressed confidence in the Senate’s swift action on the matter and emphasized his respect for the lawmakers.
Upon approval, the President is expected to nominate replacements for the vacant REC positions.
