LASTMA begs Lagos road users to obey traffic rules after accident claims one life

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has implored road users to be more careful and comply with traffic regulations to avert accidents.

The general manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, appealed in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesman, Taofiq Adebayo, in Lagos on Sunday.

Mr Bakare-Oki said a multi-vehicle collision claimed one life and left 17 injured on Sunday morning due to a loss of control by a truck driver.

He said the accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge, Lagos State.

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver of a Mack truck, with registration number KWL 923 XB and fully laden with diesel, lost control of the vehicle while speeding towards Ojota.

“ In a desperate attempt to apply faulty brakes, the truck rammed into seven other vehicles (buses and cars) from behind, causing widespread damage.

“This tragic event underscores the critical importance of road safety and serves as a stark reminder for all drivers to exercise vigilance and comply with traffic regulations,” he said.

The general manager said a passenger in one of the affected buses suffered a serious head injury and died instantly.

He said the 17 injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this accident. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users in Lagos State,” he said.
