Kano cracks down on goats threatening tree-planting project

-

The Kano State Government has launched an unexpected enforcement operation, arresting goats for damaging newly planted tree seedlings as part of its Urban Renewal Programme.

This was disclosed in a statement by Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, on Friday.

He revealed that several goats had already been seized and are currently being held at Zone I of the Nigeria Police Command in Kano.

“In our Urban Renewal drive, we’ve started planting trees along major streets, beginning with Lodge Road and Race Course,” Dr. Hashim explained.

According to him, the initiative is designed to reduce extreme heat, combat air pollution, and improve the aesthetic appeal of Kano city.

However, he expressed frustration over the setback posed by wandering goats.

“We’ve received reports that some individuals allow their goats to roam freely, and these animals are now destroying the young trees we’ve planted,” he lamented.

He issued a warning that the government would no longer tolerate such behaviour. “We have already impounded several goats found eating the new trees,” he stated firmly.

The ministry further announced that enforcement teams would continue to patrol the city, and that the goats would remain in custody.

Dr. Hashim called on residents to actively support the greening initiative. “We’re calling on the public to work with us to protect these efforts.

Together, we can build a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano,” he added.
