Agriculture holds key to Nigeria’s devt – Oluremi Tinubu

-

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the central role of agriculture in the country’s development, highlighting its importance in achieving food security, creating jobs, and boosting the economy.

She made this known on Wednesday during the distribution of agricultural inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers in Delta State under the Renewed Hope Initiative Agricultural Support Programme.

The event, held in Asaba, was organised in partnership with the ‘You Matter Charity Foundation’.

Represented by the wife of the Delta State Governor, Tobore Oborevwori, Mrs. Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the increasing involvement of women, youth, secondary school students, and cooperative groups in farming.

She emphasized the relevance of home gardening, describing it as a tradition that sustained past generations and can still ease economic pressure on households today.

According to her, the ‘Every Home a Garden’ campaign aims to encourage families to grow their own food as a means of improving their nutrition and reducing household expenses.

“Anyone can participate, regardless of age or gender. Planting your own food not only promotes healthier eating habits but also provides access to fresh produce,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu announced that various farm tools and seedlings were being distributed to beneficiaries, including women, youth, students, and farming cooperatives.

She encouraged the recipients to remain committed and put the support to good use.

Sharing her personal experience, the First Lady revealed that she maintains a garden behind her home, where she is currently growing crops such as corn and vegetables.

She urged others to follow suit and contribute to efforts aimed at increasing food availability nationwide.

Speaking at the event, the wife of the Delta State Governor, represented by the Deputy Governor’s wife, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme, said the initiative is a reflection of the government’s commitment to empowering farmers with essential resources and financial support.

She noted that while farmers form a large part of the population, they are often hindered by limited access to funding and modern agricultural practices.

Mrs. Onyeme described farmer empowerment as a crucial step toward ensuring food security, improving household incomes, and positioning agriculture as a viable economic activity.

She praised Mrs. Tinubu for her leadership and vision under the Renewed Hope Initiative and encouraged beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity presented to them.

She concluded by calling on stakeholders to continue supporting efforts to make agriculture thrive, empower women, and foster prosperity for both Delta State and the country at large.
