Firearm makers, cultists nabbed as Enugu police intensify security operations

The Enugu State Police Command has made significant arrests in its ongoing crackdown on criminality.

The command detained four suspects across separate operations for crimes ranging from drug peddling and armed robbery to illegal gun possession and cultism.

A press release by Police Spokesman Daniel Ndukwe on Wednesday disclosed that a Beretta pistol and a quantity of high-grade cannabis known as “Loud” were retrieved from one of the suspects, Ikechukwu Ugwele (35), nicknamed “Angle 90.”

The recovery followed his arrest by the Crack Tactical Squad on May 9. Ugwele allegedly confessed to a series of crimes and directed the operatives to where the weapon was hidden.

In a related operation on May 8, the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad arrested Emmanuel Eze (25), also known as “Camara,” and seized a locally fabricated pistol.

His capture stemmed from confessions by two other suspects—Uchenna Nwudi (29), a self-confessed firearm fabricator, and Eze Chiadikobi (32), accused of transformer vandalism.

Both suspects were identified as members of the notorious Vikings confraternity.

Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings would commence once investigations are finalized.

Highlighting the command’s broader efforts, Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa had previously reported the arrest of 291 individuals in connection with various offences since he took office in March.

These include cases of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful arms possession, and cult activities.

He noted the successful rescue of 36 kidnap victims and the seizure of numerous weapons and stolen vehicles.

Giwa reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to ridding the state of crime and urged the public to work hand-in-hand with security agencies to safeguard their communities.
