Tompolo in EFCC’s crosshairs over alleged Naira abuse at birthday bash

-

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that former Niger Delta warlord, Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo, will be questioned following a viral video that appears to show him flouting Nigeria’s currency laws.

In the widely circulated footage, Tompolo is seen dancing as bundles of ₦1,000 notes are sprayed around him during his 54th birthday celebration.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism and reignited public debate about selective enforcement of anti-corruption laws.

The EFCC, in a brief statement issued Monday, said Tompolo “has questions to answer” and stressed that “nobody is above the law.”

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, which prohibits mishandling of the naira at events, including spraying, stepping on, or mutilating the currency.

This development follows a wave of arrests and prosecutions in recent weeks. Popular crossdresser Bobrisky was handed a six-month jail sentence for Naira abuse, while businessman E-Money was grilled by the EFCC over similar allegations involving both local and foreign currencies.

So far, the EFCC claims it has recorded over two dozen convictions related to currency abuse and has more than 200 ongoing cases across the country.

As of the time of this report, Tompolo has not issued a response, and it remains unclear whether he has been formally summoned.
