Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has refuted accusations that he is causing divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting instead that his actions are aimed at fortifying the opposition party.
Wike addressed the media in Abuja on Monday, pushing back against growing criticism over his perceived influence in the PDP’s internal power struggles and leadership disputes. Some party members have accused him of playing a role in destabilising the party’s structure.
Responding to whether his actions were tearing the party apart, Wike said, “I’m not destroying the PDP — I’m building it. People are leaving because they are unsure about who is authorised to sign official documents. The constitution is clear: communication with INEC must come from either the National Chairman or National Secretary.”
He raised concerns about the ongoing confusion surrounding the rightful occupant of the National Secretary role, warning that it could disrupt key electoral functions such as the upcoming area council elections, which require validly signed documentation submitted to INEC.
“This situation has created a crisis — who will INEC recognise as the rightful signatory for official documents? If this is not resolved, our activities could be challenged in court,” Wike explained.
He urged party members to put aside personal interests and adhere strictly to constitutional processes to protect the PDP from legal pitfalls.
“If we truly care about the future of the party, we must be willing to make sacrifices. Anything done outside the law will not stand,” he warned.
Speaking on the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Wike emphasized the legal implications of procedural errors.
“Who has the authority to issue NEC notices? If it comes from anyone other than the National Secretary, I’ll challenge it in court. That’s what the law — and the Supreme Court — says.”
Wike’s remarks highlight the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP as it prepares for future elections.
According to PUNCH Online, current and former PDP governors met on Sunday in a reconciliation session chaired by ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, with Wike also present at the meeting.
