The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formed a reconciliation panel led by ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki in a renewed effort to resolve internal grievances ahead of its upcoming NEC meeting.
This decision emerged from a late-night strategy session held at the Abuja lodge of Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum. Present at the meeting were key party leaders, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and governors from Osun, Plateau, Adamawa, Oyo, and Enugu states.
Several influential past governors, such as Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), also participated.
The PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and former Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, were among those in attendance.
Speaking afterwards, Governor Mohammed stressed the importance of unity as the party heads toward a national convention.
He noted that veteran politicians were invited to lend their wisdom to help navigate challenges and chart a peaceful path forward.
The PDP has been on the defensive following the defection of Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other key officials to the APC.
Similar shifts have occurred at the national level, with three senators from Kebbi State recently aligning with the ruling party after a visit to President Bola Tinubu.
These developments have sparked concerns within opposition ranks about Nigeria inching toward a one-party political landscape.
Internal discord, exemplified by the ongoing feud between Nyesom Wike and Rivers Governor Sim Fubara, has only compounded the PDP’s struggles.
Despite these setbacks, the party insists it remains focused on reconciliation and regaining lost ground before its NEC and national convention later in the year.
