In a strategic political development, Senator Kawu Samaila representing Kano South has defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made on Wednesday during the Senate’s plenary session.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio formally declared the defection after reading a letter submitted by Senator Kawu. The letter informed the Senate of his decision to abandon the NNPP for the ruling APC.
Following the announcement, there was a notable show of camaraderie from APC lawmakers. They gathered around Kawu in celebration, welcoming him warmly to their side.
The lawmakers then guided him to his new seat on the side of the Senate occupied by APC members, signifying his new political home.
Kawu’s defection is considered a significant political gain for the APC, which already holds a majority in the Senate.
While no official reason was given for his move, political insiders speculate that the defection may be connected to realignments in anticipation of the 2027 general elections and Kano’s shifting political landscape.
