Army captain killed as renewed Boko Haram attack spreads in Borno

-

In another tragic episode of Boko Haram’s continued campaign in Borno State, an Army Captain and a soldier were confirmed dead after a pre-dawn assault in Izge, Gwoza LGA.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, reported that the attack occurred around 1 a.m., but local defence forces, made up of military personnel, Civilian Joint Task Force members, hunters, and vigilantes, successfully fought back, killing three militants.

The attackers abandoned over 10 motorcycles and several weapons while escaping.

The Emir expressed sorrow over the deaths and lauded the sacrifices of security forces who remain in pursuit of the fleeing insurgents.

Meanwhile, a recent SBM Intelligence report shows that Borno leads in violence-related fatalities for early 2025, with 515 deaths out of a national total exceeding 2,000. Security personnel accounted for 136 of the lives lost during this period.

Governor Zulum has reiterated the importance of pairing military responses with reintegration efforts, citing the large number of repentant insurgents, many of whom are civilians caught in conflict.
