Cult leader killed by fellow members over leadership dispute

-

Police authorities in Bayelsa State have disclosed that the death of Olotu Omubo, the alleged head of the Bobos cult group, was orchestrated by his own members over an internal power tussle.

During a media briefing in Yenagoa, Commissioner of Police Francis Idu stated that Omubo, a native of Nembe Local Government Area and a known beneficiary of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, was targeted by his gang members who sought to take over the group’s leadership.

The incident occurred on April 24 along Goodnews Street in the Azikoro area of Yenagoa. Initial assumptions linked the murder to rival cult groups or possibly hired attackers retaliating against previous killings.

However, the police have since clarified that the motive stemmed from internal betrayal.

Commissioner Idu emphasized that intelligence gathered pointed overwhelmingly to internal conflict.

“Our investigation indicates the motive was leadership rivalry within the cult group, cleverly staged to appear as an attack from outside,” he explained.

He noted that although Omubo had previous run-ins with law enforcement—including being caught with illegal firearms—external influence prevented the authorities from prosecuting him.

“Letting criminals off the hook through interference only worsens public safety,” Idu warned.

In the course of ongoing operations, the police also arrested several suspects linked to other crimes across the state.

These include Mohammed Adamu, 50, and Adiamakubo Orubo, 37, in connection with the disappearance of Ashiru Ishiaku, a 26-year-old man from Kano, along with his tricycle.

Another suspect, David Ngo, 36, of Brass LGA, was taken into custody for allegedly killing Goodwill Ovuru in Agudama-Ekpetiama. Meanwhile, Monday Daniel, 28, was arrested in Onopa for reportedly robbing a woman of her smartphone at gunpoint.

Additionally, Endurance Odambe Chinedu, 24, from Delta State, was arrested with 10 live cartridges.

He admitted being a member of the Black Axe confraternity. Items recovered during a search of his home included a battle axe and a cult-branded black beret.

Police have reassured the public that they are intensifying efforts to dismantle cult networks and maintain order in Bayelsa.
