NiMet forecasts dust haze, thunderstorms across Nigeria

-

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of hazy conditions and thunderstorms across several parts of Nigeria from Tuesday through Thursday.

In a weather update released on Monday, NiMet stated that areas such as Katsina and Kano are likely to experience mild dust haze on Tuesday.

Thunderstorm activity is also expected in Taraba and Adamawa later that day.

The North-Central region will likely see partly sunny skies with some cloud cover in the morning, while thunderstorms could develop in places like Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory as the day progresses.

In southern Nigeria, cloudy weather mixed with sunshine is expected, alongside early morning thunderstorms in parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are predicted to spread across states including Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Imo, Abia, Lagos, and Delta.

For Wednesday, NiMet expects the northern region to remain mostly sunny with occasional clouds, while Taraba and Adamawa may experience thunderstorms by afternoon.

The North-Central region, including Abuja, Niger, Plateau, and Kogi, is likely to see stormy weather in the later part of the day.

In the South, thunderstorms are anticipated during morning hours in states like Bayelsa and Cross River, with more widespread thunderstorm activity across Ogun, Osun, Ebonyi, Lagos, Enugu, and other southern states by afternoon and evening.

On Thursday, clear skies with scattered clouds are forecast for the North, with thunderstorms expected to develop later in the day in parts of Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and Nasarawa.

Southern regions may experience morning storms in Delta and Bayelsa, followed by more extensive thunderstorms in areas including Ekiti, Ogun, Anambra, Edo, and Rivers.

NiMet advised the public to remain cautious, especially those with respiratory conditions, due to the presence of dust particles.

It also warned of possible strong winds that may accompany thunderstorms, urging residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rains, unplug electrical appliances during storms, and stay away from tall trees.

Airlines were encouraged to obtain detailed forecasts specific to their routes from NiMet for safety planning.

Citizens were also urged to stay updated by checking the agency’s website at www.nimet.gov.ng.
