Peter Obi has he 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), stating it reflects the continued decline of Nigeria’s educational system.
The Labour Party’s former presidential candidate shared his thoughts in a statement posted on social media.
According to figures released by JAMB, just over 420,000 of nearly 2 million candidates scored above 200, with more than 78% falling below that threshold.
Obi described the results as a grim reminder of how poor policy and low investment in education have crippled learning outcomes.
“This is not just about bad grades—it’s about a national failure. Our future is being jeopardized by our refusal to prioritize education,” he warned.
Highlighting Nigeria’s lag in global education metrics, Obi cited Bangladesh, whose single National University accommodates more students than Nigeria’s entire university system.
He also pointed to Turkey, which has over 7 million university students, dwarfing Nigeria’s enrollment despite a smaller population gap.
Obi has long advocated for seeing education as a vital national investment. He reiterated that without urgent and substantial intervention in education, Nigeria’s progress will continue to stall.
“We can’t achieve national prosperity or security without elevating education to its rightful place,” he said.
