Trigger-happy security operative kills woman in Anambra

Authorities in Anambra State have launched a formal investigation into the alleged fatal shooting of a woman by a member of the local security task force, Agunechemba, during a traffic incident in Nnewi.

The deceased, identified as Chiamaka Okeke, was reportedly hit by a stray bullet on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the busy Ibeto Junction.

According to locals who witnessed the incident, a severe traffic jam had built up when the Agunechemba convoy approached the scene.

In an effort to force their way through the jam, the security personnel fired live rounds into the air to scare motorists and create space.

Tragically, one of the bullets struck Chiamaka, who was among the road users at the scene. She collapsed immediately and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The sudden eruption of gunfire sparked panic among commuters, prompting many to flee. Witnesses claim the Agunechemba officers left the area abruptly following the chaos.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson SP Ikenga Tochukwu said the state commissioner of police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has assured the public that steps are being taken to identify and apprehend the shooter.

He emphasized the command’s commitment to ensuring accountability and justice.

Tochukwu added that the police were coordinating with the concerned security outfit as part of the ongoing investigation. Further updates are expected as inquiries continue.
