Kenyan police have taken into custody a man believed to be behind the rape and killing of two young women in Gatundu North Constituency, Kiambu County.
The suspect, identified as Samuel Kamau, was arrested on Wednesday, April 16, in the Dry area of Ngorongo village.
Kamau, reportedly a neighbour to the two victims — 22-year-old Rosemary Njeri Ndekei and 20-year-old Hellen Wambui — is said to have confessed to committing both murders.
According to investigators, Kamau not only admitted to the crimes but also attended the girls’ burial ceremonies and even helped dig their graves, shocking the local community.
Detectives were able to track Kamau down after he began using Njeri’s phone, which led authorities to his location via its IMEI number.
In the case of Wambui, police say her mobile phone was thrown into a pit latrine. It was later retrieved with the assistance of area youths.
The suspect is currently in custody and awaiting arraignment. He is said to have shown no regret during interrogation, admitting to both rape and murder.
One of the victims, Hellen Wambui, went missing on the evening of March 30 after her mother sent her to a local MPESA outlet to withdraw cash for dinner. She never returned. After a frantic two-day search, her body was discovered near her family’s home.
Rosemary Njeri, the second victim, was last seen after her boyfriend, John Ndung’u Mwihaki, dropped her off en route to meet a friend.
Her body was later found in a coffee plantation, partially burned with acid.
Authorities have promised a thorough investigation and swift justice.
