Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has used Arsenal Football Club’s recent performance to advocate for political unity and coalition-building.
In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Atiku commended Arsenal’s teamwork, describing it as a powerful example of what can be achieved through collective effort and strategic unity.
“Arsenal just taught us a lesson in consolidating our strengths in a coalition vehicle. Victory is assured when we stand united,” he wrote.
His remarks come at a time when conversations around opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections are gaining momentum.
Although the PDP Governors’ Forum has distanced itself from any formal merger or alliance, Atiku has remained vocal in his belief that opposition parties must come together to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) effectively.
Using football as a metaphor for political strategy, Atiku’s message appears to be a subtle appeal to other political figures and groups about the power of collaboration and shared purpose.
A passionate football fan and lifelong supporter of Arsenal, Atiku frequently draws parallels between sports and politics, often using such analogies to engage with younger Nigerians and the wider public on issues of national interest.
