Kaduna govt rescues boy after father’s brutal punishment leads amputation

A 7-year-old boy, Abubakar Sani, may lose both legs after suffering severe burns allegedly inflicted by his father in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The man reportedly poured hot water on the child’s tied legs as punishment for stealing biscuits.

The Kaduna State Government confirmed the rescue of the child and said the injuries were so severe that doctors have recommended a double amputation below the knee to save his life.

Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Rabi Salisu, who made this known in a statement on Wednesday, said the ministry received the distressing report about nine days earlier.

“By the time the case got to us, his legs were already decaying with maggots, and medical experts advised that amputating both legs was the only way to prevent further complications,” she said.

According to Salisu, the boy was also locked in a room for more than 20 days by his father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, and his stepmother, during which he was denied proper food and care.

Both suspects have since been arrested and are expected to face prosecution after investigations are concluded.

The commissioner reiterated that the state government would not condone child abuse or domestic violence in any form, adding, “We are committed to ensuring that justice is done in this case, and that the perpetrators are held accountable.”

Dr. Abdulkadir Musa, Chief Medical Director of Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, where the boy is currently receiving treatment, said Abubakar would require prosthetic limbs after surgery.

He urged parents to be cautious when disciplining children, stressing that extreme punishment can lead to devastating outcomes.

The state government reaffirmed its stance on protecting children’s rights and welfare.

Salisu noted that efforts would continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every child in Kaduna State.
