The Northern Women Lawyers Congress has issued a stern warning, threatening a public demonstration in Kano if former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II refuses to submit a statement to the Nigerian Police as directed by Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun.
The Chairperson of the group, Barrister Nafisa Abba, urged the former monarch to uphold the rule of law and cooperate with ongoing investigations into the fatal incident that occurred during the banned Sallah Durbar.
“As women lawyers committed to justice in the North, we’ve consistently spoken out against injustice—from rape victims to the recent Uromi killings in Edo,” she said.
“This case is no different. We will not remain silent while lives are lost during events that were clearly prohibited by security agencies.”
Abba stressed that the Congress is a legally recognized body, and challenged those defending Sanusi to do so transparently.
“We are not hiding behind pseudonyms. We are lawyers, registered and active—especially in Kano. I call on anyone speaking for the Emir to step forward publicly,” she stated.
She warned that unless Sanusi complies with the police directive, the Congress would mobilize its members to stage a protest in Kano.
“Being an Emir does not place anyone above the law,” she said firmly. “You are neither a governor nor a president. Immunity does not apply here.”
